Hot Tips for a Successful Summer Move

Tyra Douyon • Jun 02, 2023

We know that summer is the time for relaxation. Maybe you have plans to lounge on the beach, have a few backyard barbeques, or go out of town for a vacation. Whatever you end up doing this summer, moving into a new home is on many people’s to-do lists. At Fairin Realty we value your experience with us– that includes making your move as safe and stress-free as possible. To help our residents prepare for the big move, we have compiled a few of the most popular summer moving tips so planning ahead can be a breeze.

Before You Move

  • Declutter and Donate Unwanted Items - Are there areas of your home that need to be decluttered? Are the piles of unwanted clothing, large furniture, and old decor pieces getting larger? Make sure to clean and organize your space before you start packing to ensure the items you travel with are intended for your new home.

  • Pack a Suitcase - Pack a suitcase with items you will need as soon as you move in. A bag with some clothes, hygiene and beauty items, medicine and vitamins, towels, toilet paper, paper towels, electronics and chargers, and cleaning supplies will save you much-needed time and stress. Give yourself the gift of peace of mind and prepare your necessities without having to unpack.

  • Create a Moving Budget - To offset unexpected costs and fees, don’t forget to create a moving budget! Whether you’re renting a U-Haul and packing boxes yourself or calling a moving company to handle your delicate items and large pieces, create a line-by-line budget for everything you may need. This includes packing supplies, child and/or pet care, and food for the day.

  • Find Movers and Schedule Your Date - With schools closed and warm weather activities kicking off, the summer is notoriously the busiest time of year to move. That means movers have multiple appointments each day and can only accommodate people who book their services in advance. Also, the price of using a moving company increases during the summer. Forget about asking your family and friends to haul boxes in exchange for pizza slices this year. Find a reputable moving company with good reviews and affordable prices then, schedule your move as soon as possible to avoid delays and late changes.

  • Plan Your Moving Day Schedule - To avoid any potential mishaps, schedule all appointments and plans before the big moving day. Do the kids need a babysitter? Does the dog have to be taken to daycare? Did you remember to buy extra water bottles and meal prep lunch? All of these small details can feel overwhelming if you’re trying to make decisions while moving. Figure out a plan that works for you so move-in day is less chaotic.

  • Pack Carefully to Avoid Disasters - No moving nightmare is worse than opening a box of shattered glassware, or realizing your important electronics were in the same box as your leaking cleaning supplies. Be sure to pack your fragile items with the right materials, label boxes by room, and unpack in an organized way. This will save you a lot of stress as you unpack.

  • Wear Weather-Resistant Clothes and Apply Sunscreen - Check the weather a few days before your move and plan accordingly so the clothes you wear will withstand the summer heat. Pack the flip-flops and expensive jewelry away and opt to wear something comfortable like sneakers and a t-shirt so you can move safely and effectively. Before heading outside apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your body. Remember to choose sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to avoid getting sunburned!

  • Take Pictures Upon Arrival - When you arrive at your new home and before you begin unpacking, do a walk through of your new space. Make sure to take pictures of everything (including the exterior) to keep a photographic record of how your leased home looked as soon as you entered it. That way if any questions arise later, you have  documentation to submit.
